New Spam calls from 01542 842715

Had a new spam call from 01542842715 today regarding financial services. Obviously TPS did not operate at it should do. I will investigate to see if this is unauthorised overlay service.

Thank you for your comments. In answer to the “I do not give my landline number out & how did they get my number?” the explanation I received from a call centre operator, when challenged on this point, was that the phone number is allegedly dialled  at “random” so as to get round the TPS issue. However, it is worth remembering that numbers can be harvested from a number of places especially competitions and application forms. It is always worth ticking the box “do not pass on my details to third parties or sister companies” or something to that effect if you are filling out promotional forms. You can also withdraw your consent at any time from these companies.

Tellows is saying the calls originate from Keith in UK, however the Google map give an address in the US here

In praise of the not so Smart Phone

I recently found a nearly iPhone on the beach just short of an incoming tide (see recent post), and it got me thinking.

You would not wear your beach clothes in the office so why would you take your iPhone/workphone on a sandy beach where it could get damaged or lost?

I had been wrestling with this idea for a while which is why I ended up buying a Samsungcandy bar” style rugged phone to take the place of my Android smartphone when outdoors.

Why would you do this you may ask? Well for starters, when I’m not working, I spend a lot of time on the beach/outdoors and this phone is waterproof. It also has a great battery life and noise cancelling so you can still hold a conversation in high winds or a noisy environment. Also, if I loose this phone, I won’t be upset because it cost less than £100 GBP.

Now the manufacturer claimed the phone could manage basic social media such as Twitter and Facebook but I have never been able to get either of these functions to work in any sort of fashion. However, on the plus side, it has allowed me to become more productive because I am not constantly checking tweets and notifications all the time. It is also has a voice recorder so I can make notes whilst walking or running and a timer and pedometer so I can keep track exercise and distance.

I do have to admit that initially I was not overly enthusiastic about this phone but now I have grown used to it’s foibles I quite like its dependability and robustness 😉

To summarise, if you are in the market for a new phone or your existing one doesnt really fit your needs, then think about what would better suit your needs. Do you need a sledgehammer phone to crack the proverbial nut or will a more modest piece of equipment do just as well? You might end up saving yourself some money and free up some time from social media 😉

What happened when I found an iPhone

I found an iPhone on the beach this week. It was lucky to survive as the tide was only a few feet away and it could have easily been swamped by the tide. There was no one around at the time so I popped it in my pocket and then set about wondering what to do with it. I could not ring the owner as they obviously did not have the phone and they might not be at home anyway.

First thing to mind was to put notice on Social Media networks that it had been found but suppose the owner or friends weren’t social media users? Next thought was to hand it at the local Police station necessitating a drive into town.

As chance would have it, the owner realised it was missing and asked a passer by if they would ring his number. The phone rang, I answered and we agreed to meet as he was out for a jog and not too far way.

The iPhone was duly reunited to a grateful owner but it got me thinking what would have happened if it had not been reunited so easily? These phones have become extensions of ourselves. They may have photo and films of our families, contain our music collections and our private and business contacts. It got me thinking what would you do if it happened to you and this information was lost? Have you backed the information up and is the phone secure from prying eyes?

Well I must confess my that my smart phone was not secured or backed up. However, it is now pin code protected and fully backed up 🙂

So if you haven’t done so already I would also suggest you to consider similar action and ask yourself what would you do if your phone was lost?
